Tidal Barrier – synopsis
Three stories about relationships, exploring the possibilities of who we might have been and who we might become.

Sophie
Sophie has a great relationship with Paul. Together they seem to bring out the best in each other.
But one day Sophie begins to wonder, what if I never met him? Who might I have been then? If meeting him or anyone was just chance then so is who they are.
(Claire, Sophie’s best friend, wants to hear none of it. How could another man change her? Who might she have been if she was with Paul? Wouldn’t her life have been so much better? Sophie can’t seem to appreciate what she has)
Sophie becomes obsessed with exploring the mystery of this other life, and her relationship with Paul begins to unravel.

Claire
In Claire’s story both Claire and Sophie have their wish: Claire is with Paul, and Sophie has never been.
Bu it is not at all what Claire would’ve imagined, for as Paul keeps telling her: ‘there is no ‘we’, you have not really committed to me’.
When Clare’s sister Natalie, leaves London to escape an obessesive boyfriend Claire  seizes on a chance to take on a different life and finally learn what it is to engage with someone. She moves into her flat, ingratiates herself with Natalie’s boss, friends and starts with a relationsip with Nick, the obessesive. But she soon realises that unlike Sophie she is unable to change who she is by being with someone else.

Paul
With Sophie, Paul knew who he was and what he wanted, but with Claire he is another man. Clare never commits to the relationship, driving Paul to despair. When Claire disappears he begins to search for her, despite his friends wondering why he would bother. After all, their relationship was a disaster.
Then one day he bumps into Sophie in the street. He becomes convinced that if he was with Sophie he would be another man and all that stands in the way was chance. He begins to calculate and plan a way that he and Sophie might come together, but when this fails, his life is sent into a spiral.
